Team 7-Eleven: How an unsung Band of American Cyclists Took on the World and WON

If you love cycling, this book is for you.7-11

I had the opportunity to be at the premier of this book at Interbike several months ago. It was a fantastic occasion with cyclists new and old celebrating this great part, the basic part of US cycling history. (I got there early so I did not meet a lot of the riders; I had a good spot at the bar. No, I was handing drinks back to friends so my copy got signed by a friend. But what signatures! I’m still trying to figure out who signed my book.)

It was right in the middle of the National Outdoor Book Awards, so I did not get around to read it until recently. When I did read it, I finished it in three nights. Thanks Dave for the book, the reminder and the party!

The book itself starts out a little slow because there are a lot of backgrounds and personalities who come together to make this team. Luck, happenstance and boredom at ice rinks created the first US cycling team. It also takes a while of living in basements, building a team in a garage, and finding the people to develop the idea of the team. Then the book quickly starts to roll, and it never slows down from there. The book provides a great background on each rider as he was recruited for the team as well as the personalities of the people who created, funded and kept the team riding. The book has 100 color and dozens of black-and-white photographs. It is great to see celebrities of today, as young riders thirty years ago. Several you can spot immediately.

More importantly for those of you who do not understanding professional cycling this book is a great starter book to understand the professional cycling system and how the riders of today got their start. These tough guys, living in vans, sleeping on floors and riding their hearts out crated the basis for the start of today. Their hard work, grit, determination and in some cases luck makes a great story told in this book.

This book brings out the personalities, the grit, the laughs and pain of America’s first professional cycling team and tells their story.

Pick up this book. It is a great read.
