Sterling Rope Kicks off 25th Anniversary Treasure Hunt
Posted: July 17, 2018 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: 25th Anniversary, American Alpine Club, Anniversary, Sterling Rope, Treasure Hunt Leave a comment
Climbing rope brand Sterling wants all climbers, explorers and adventurers to think about their brand when they head to the hills. They recently announced an international treasure hunt and Instagram contest to celebrate its 25th anniversary. From June to November, Sterling will be partnering with Access Fund (@AccessFund) and the American Alpine Club (@AmericanAlpine) to place wooden #Sterling25 markers at 25 different crags across the US and Canada – anywhere from the trailhead to the top of a climb – and clues will be posted by @SterlingRope each week to help hunters find them.
Every Friday through November 16 @SterlingRope will post a photo and factual clue from its Instagram page. The first person to discover the #Sterling25 marker and post a photo with it tagging #Sterling25, @SterlingRope, @AccessFund, @AmericanAlpine will win a new Sterling rope. The next 25 people to post with the same marker will receive additional Sterling swag. Each day the marker goes unfound, another clue will be released to help treasure hunters win.
There will be 25 different markers in locations ranging from Alaska to Alberta, Washington to West Virginia, and Michigan to Maine, giving hunters around the country 650 chances to win.

American Alpine Club looking for Special Volunteers and Interns
Posted: July 13, 2013 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: #AAC, American Alpine Club, American Alpine Club Library, American Alpine Journal, Digital Editor, Ernest Shackleton, Publications Intern Leave a commentWe’re Hiring a Volunteer
Editor and Intern
“Men wanted for hazardous journey, small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful, honor and recognition in case of success…”
While we are not recruiting for anything as hazardous as Ernest Shackleton‘s expedition, we are looking for an extraordinary volunteer for a one-of-a-kind position and a talented intern.
Digital Editor
The AAC is seeking someone who is passionate about climbing and the documenation of new routes, expeditions, and accidents. We hope to find a dedicated, long-term volunteer for the new position of Digital Editor, helping AAC staff and other volunteers develop, populate, and curate the AAC’s new publications website, as well as new forms of digital storytelling. We won’t lie: There will be substantial grunt work involved. But you’ll also be a key leader and manager in shaping the future of the AAC’s digital information resources. If you love the AAJ and Accidents, and you love online information, this may be the volunteer opportunity of a lifetime. Previous experience with publishing on WordPress or similar platforms very important. Residence in metro Denver area helpful but not required. The time and flexibility for a significant commitment to AAC publications: essential. If this sounds appealing, contact Dougald MacDonald, AAC Executive Editor. Honor and recognition (and some cool perks, too) are guaranteed.
Publications Intern
Always dreamed of working on the American Alpine Journal or Accidents in North American Mountaineering? Want to learn print and digital publishing skills in the climbing industry? The Publications Intern will work among a dedicated team of climbers and editors to gain lifelong skills in multimedia journalism and publishing. While intern missions vary from day to day, the AAC gives interns the freedom to design work plans that support both the organization and their future aspirations. Interns must work from AAC headquarters in Golden, CO and commit 20 hours/week for four to six months. The Publications Intern position is unpaid; however, interns may receive college credit. Check out the complete description. Applicants should email their resume and cover letter to Erik Rieger, AAC Assistant Editor.

Zack Martin Breaking Barriers Grant Page
The Zack Martin Breaking Barriers Grant (ZMBB) is a dual-purpose grant fund. The primary objective is humanitarian and the secondary objective is climbing, alpinism and/or exploration in the natural environment. The grantee must meet both objectives and is strongly encouraged to obtain additional funding. The humanitarian objective must be reasonable, and sustainable. Objectives that continue after implementation will receive the highest level of consideration. Focus the objective to affect the greatest human change. The alpine objective should focus on climbing and/or exploration but need not be at the leading edge of climbing or alpinism.
Zack Martin died just before his 25th birthday on Thanksgiving Day 2002. He was a recipient of AAC grants, the Anatoli Boukreev grant and others. Zack was concerned about the general arrogance and self-serving aspirations of climbers and explorers. He committed that on all future expeditions he would not only climb and explore but more importantly he would perform humanitarian service in the local community. He would “break a barrier” in the alpine environment and “break a barrier” in the heart of man. As Zack often said, “The only barrier holding you back is yourself.”

New American Alpine Club Library Book Club starting in Vermont
Posted: February 19, 2012 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: #AAC, AAC Library, American Alpine Club, American Alpine Club Library, Book Club, Books, Libraries, Library, Library and Information Science, Literature, Mountaineering, read Leave a commentOur focus is to discuss mountaineering literature, new and old, covering the world’s mountains.
Before our first meeting! – Please email me a list of three books you’d like to suggest we read. I’ll collate these suggestions and bring them to the meeting.
First meeting – Wednesday, February 22nd, 7pm, at the Carpenter Carse Library, 69 Ballards Corner, Hinesburg, VT 05461
(Some folks have indicated they may not be able to make this meeting but are still interested in future meetings.)
Agenda/Goals (this first meeting will be organizational in nature, all you need to read is this email!)
Introductions
Who we are
How we became interested in mountain books
What we’ve enjoyed reading
Where we find our books
Do you consider yourself a collector or casual reader?
Etc.
Decide on what to read, perhaps select first three titles
Decide on frequency of meetings (monthly?)
Select next date options (will need to confirm with Library)
(Please send me other thoughts you may have for our agenda. Thanks!)
Library rules – Non-alcoholic drinks are okay.
We should remove our own trash. (Leave no trace!)
The library has just installed a new carpet so they’d like to keep it as clean as possible.
I plan to arrive about 6:45pm to set up tables and chairs.
Feel free to forward this announcement to anyone you think may be interested. I look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible!
Cheers, Greg
