James H. (Jim) Moss, JD. Bio

James H. “Jim” Moss, is an attorney specializes in the business issues of outdoor recreation and adventure travel companies and manufacturers of outdoor recreation products worldwide. His clients range from manufacturers and importers to independent representatives and retailers as well as federal concessionaires and permittees. He also represents a variety of industry organizations and companies.

Mr. Moss is the only attorney to win an outdoor recreation case with the Board of Land Appeals. He is a former trial attorney and lead or participated in 13 different trials based on outdoor recreation incidents or camping issues.

His clients guide on Mt. Everest and every other significant mountain in the world and most deserts and rivers. There are few spots on earth where Jim does not have a client taking people on the trips of a lifetime. He also represents manufacturers of outdoor recreation products. His clients range from manufacturers and importers to independent representatives and retailers as well as federal concessionaires. He represents a variety of industry organizations and companies. He represents College and University programs across the US and Mexico.

Jim currently represents manufacturers of rock climbing and mountaineering gear, including ropes, protection and harnesses, climbing wall and hold manufacturers; backcountry skis, bindings, airbag and beacon manufactures. He has clients make products for the cycling, scuba, whitewater rafting, paddlesports, team building, E-bike and other recreation markets.

Jim is the author or co-author of six books: The Lawyer’s Advisor, Outdoor Recreation, Travel, and Hospitality Forms, Outdoor Recreation Insurance and Law, Outdoor Recreation Risk Management, Insurance & Law, Rafting the Grand Canyon co-author of Legal Liability and Risk Management in Adventure Tourism and. Jim Moss is a contributing author to the Boy Scouts of America Boy Scout Fieldbook, Mountain Medicine and Technical Rescue and the NRPA Management of Park and Recreation Agencies 4th Ed.

Jim Moss is the US legal representative to the UIAA (Union Internationale des Association d’Alpinisme) Legal Committee and serves on 58 ASTM committees.

Jim is a member of the Spokesmen Cycling Roundtable Podcast and has been published in numerous publications. He has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, the Denver Post, and the Rocky Mountain News. He has made presentations to Colorado attorneys, the Western River Guides Association, the Professional Paddlesports Association, the Boy Scouts of America, and the International Conference on Outdoor Recreation, the Wilderness Education Association, federal land management agencies and the Sport and Recreation Law Association.

Mr. Moss has given over 500 presentations and speeches and provides training to corporations and organizations. He has been asked to speak at the Colorado Bar Association, and Continuing Legal Education Programs. He has made presentations to the Western River Guides Association, the Professional Paddlesports Association, the Boy Scouts of America, the Association for Outdoor Recreation and Education, Wilderness Education Association and the Campground Owners and Directors Association.

Jim Moss is a founding member of the National Outdoor Book Awards, and the Association of Sports Lawyers Group, Galapagos Conservation Action and a member of the board of directors of the Greater Colorado Council, Boy Scouts of America.
