I am not sure why we have this fascination with “dangerous” sports and lists
Posted: December 15, 2009 Filed under: Uncategorized 3 CommentsThere is another top 10 dangerous sports list out. The list was published by Top-10-list.org and supposedly lists the top 10 dangerous sports. See Top 10 Dangerous Sports. The list is pretty much a joke and seems to be based on the most injuries total rather than the most injuries per participant or hour spent in the sport.
The list is:
Check out the website to see their justification for their list. However, I have a few issues. If bullfighting is a sport then we should include prostitution. It is a job, not a sport. Those watching may consider it a sport but those engaging in it are at work.

Lawn Bowls heads the list because the great majority of the participants in the sport are over the age of 60 and are very frequently injured falling on the green by stepping back on bowls (or “woods” as the English love to call them). The green is also surrounded by a “ditch” and older players frequently break ankles, legs, hips stepping up and down on and off the green. Heat exhaustion and just plain old age often causes players to collapse.
So the reason for so many injuries is an age-related issue and any of these injuries could just as easily have occurred when the bowlers were in their homes or out shopping.

Interesting list, but I fail to see your distinction between work and sport. Lots of athletes are working at their “sport.”
I don't see how bullfighting is similar to prostitution at all.
Bullfighters use athletic ability to move away from bulls (similar to a linebacker and a running back). Prostitutes rarely use athletic ability (or so I am told) :)

Hmmm, I dunno- NHL, NFL athletes are paid an awful lot for their time on the ice/field and it's a job to them, but hockey and football are still sports!
