OARS has openings for 2 people on a river trip next week

Greetings Adventurers:OARS 2

As you probably know, Grand Canyon National Park opened again this last week after the government shutdown got resolved. This means that we are able to operate our river trips again to make those signed up for our October trips very happy as we operate our last two trips of the season – during the fall’s optimum weather.

Unexpectedly, we have room for two lucky people who are available for spontaneous travel starting this next Monday. Our 12-day trip, traveling from Phantom Ranch to Diamond Creek October 28 – November 8, has two seats available. Please call for details.

Win a Grand Canyon Rafting Trip
Wimps Need Not Apply. Here’s Why… This won’t be a vacation. Wait, we haven’t lost you already have we? Because this is your chance to have an epic adventure—two weeks, 280 miles, and some of the biggest whitewater on the planet—as a member of our crew.

That’s right, we’re giving away a backstage pass to the Grand Canyon. We’re going to select one lucky winner to become a “swamper” with O.A.R.S. in the Grand Canyon. Can you say…living the dream?

This is the real deal. You’ll help load the boats, spend some time on the oars, and if you’re lucky, we’ll even let you put the toilet away (just kidding – or are we?). Either way, as a bonafide crew member (don’t worry, “swamper” is just a technical term), you’ll be able to step behind the wheel and experience the Colorado River first-hand.

Sure, you might sweat a little bit and your hands will get dirty, but we can guarantee this trip will be a life-changing experience. Just check out this video if you don’t believe us.

So, if you’re ready to run legendary rapids, explore hidden side canyons, and get lost in the earth’s most famous crack for two of the best weeks of your life, we might have just the job for you…

Head over to our Facebook page from July 15 to August 19, 2013 to sign up for a chance to win this once-in-a-lifetime Grand Canyon experience:

Help Save the Colorado River and maybe win a Raft Trip

STC_Banner_new%2825%29.jpg

Hello Friends of the Colorado River!

Ready for some summer fun?! Today we are launching a photo contest, the winner of which will receive a free raft trip through the Gates of Lodore on the Green River in Dinosaur National Monument! oars1.jpg

You can enter to win by clicking here!

Our amazing friends at O.A.R.S rafting have offered this great 4 days/3 nights trip for 2 people to help protect the Colorado River and support our organization. What do you have to do to win? Just send us your coolest, funnest photos of recreating on water on the Colorado River or on any river in the Southwest U.S.

Do you have great rafting, kayaking, swimming, playing in water photos? How about photos of kids covered in mud alongside the river? Send them to us here!

Here’s the itinerary of the great rafting trip. It will take you through the heart of Dinosaur National Monument and one of the most scenic and remote canyons in the U.S.

The contest will run through July 25th –which is “Colorado River Day!”– and then we will let the public vote on the coolest photo to choose the winner of the trip. So, take a look through your photos, or better yet go out and take some photos this weekend, and send them to us here. Stay tuned for ongoing updates about this photo contest. And, again a BIG THANK YOU to O.A.R.S for offering this free trip!

Ready for some summer political action?! We are supporting our friends at Utah Rivers Council in Salt Lake City in their efforts to hold the Utah State governmenturc-audit.jpg accountable for its water policies. The Utah Rivers Council has launched a petition to force an “audit” of the Utah State Division of Water Resources. The Council alleges that the State is “cooking the books” and basically making up numbers to support proposals for massive new pipeline projects that would further destroy the Colorado River. Today the Salt Lake Tribune editorialized in support of the audit and accused the State of “lies, dam(n) lies, and statistics” by making up numbers and saying just about anything to support its pipeline proposals. The Deseret News also wrote a strong story about the issue. Major kudos go to the Utah Rivers Council which is a scrappy, gritty band of river protectors in Utah, just the kind of eco-heroes we need to protect the Colorado River for future generations. Please sign the petition here!

George Wendt, Founder of OARS will receive the Mark Dubois Award

George deserves it!

The Mark Dubois Award is given by the Friends of the River for accomplishments in saving rivers in California.

This is what the award announcement says about George.

George Wendt’s passion for running rivers was born in the 60’s when he became one of the first 1100 people to descend the seldom-traveled Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.  In the decades since, his rafting company, O.A.R.S., has been an industry leader in environmentally and culturally responsible travel on over 35 rivers and coastlines worldwide. In 2008 and 2009 the company was recognized by National Geographic Adventure as “The Best River & Sea Outfitter on Earth” and George was a recent recipient of the Adventure Travel Trade Association’s Lifetime Achievement award. Over the past four decades, George has donated countless hours and river trips in support of youth, community and conservation causes and his company has introduced more than half a million travelers to the beauty of rivers and the natural world.

The announcement misses a couple of big points.

First, George is a nice guy. You cannot walk into a room and find George and not get a smile on your face. He is always glad to see you, and he is genuine.

First, 2, George made whitewater rafting a business. He took a hobby by many introduced it to 500,000 people over the past 50 years. George started out taking Boy Scouts down the river and has taken everyone from 11 Scouts to heads of state, Hollywood celebrities and everyone in between.

First, 3, George was the first rafting company owner to realize that the voices necessary to keep rivers open and free flowing where on his rafts.

George’s “Firsts” don’t stop there, they go on for five decades.

George is a great guy and deserves this like no one else. His work in saving rivers, his understanding of the connection between his guests and keeping rivers free flowing, his commitment to his staff is amazing.

To watch George talk about his accomplishments see http://rec-law.us/P7qZrt.

Send George a congratulations: george@oars.com
