Rundown of weekly news that might be of interest!

Legal

The age that minors become adults.

I am constantly writing about the different legal issues of minors, here you can check on what that means for your state.

The age when a minor becomes an adult is currently 18 in 47 states. Alabama and Nebraska state law says an adult is someone who is 19 or older and Mississippi an adult is 21 or older.

There are exceptions for all the laws on minority in each state. A minor can become an adult if they marry, if they are emancipated or by special statutory exceptions.

Against the law now for kids to not pay attention?

Parents sue because kids were playing. Group of kids on a YMCA outing to a miniature golf course were playing around. One kid hit another in the mouth with a golf club and injured the girl. The parents are suing for inadequate supervision.

How many adults would you have to have to keep kids from playing around? 10 kids, 20 adults? The only result of these suits is kids are not going to be taken care of by adults except their parents.

Do you think our world is not that far outside the norm? This dated picture of Beth Rodden and Tommy Caldwell on a ledge was on Reddit. Besides being old, Tommy and Beth have gone their separate ways, the editor describes their actions as “Even with climbing bolts it’s still hanging off of a m*th3rf*cking rock. My idea of excitement is occasionally taking my tea with sugar.”

Remember this when you are marketing your services. Most people think you are nuts, how is the jury going to look at what you do?

Zack Martin Breaking Barriers Grant Page

The Zack Martin Breaking Barriers Grant (ZMBB) is a dual-purpose grant fund. The primary objective is humanitarian and the secondary objective is climbing, alpinism and/or exploration in the natural environment. The grantee must meet both objectives and is strongly encouraged to obtain additional funding. The humanitarian objective must be reasonable, and sustainable. Objectives that continue after implementation will receive the highest level of consideration. Focus the objective to affect the greatest human change. The alpine objective should focus on climbing and/or exploration but need not be at the leading edge of climbing or alpinism.
Zack Martin died just before his 25th birthday on Thanksgiving Day 2002. He was a recipient of AAC grants, the Anatoli Boukreev grant and others. Zack was concerned about the general arrogance and self-serving aspirations of climbers and explorers. He committed that on all future expeditions he would not only climb and explore but more importantly he would perform humanitarian service in the local community. He would “break a barrier” in the alpine environment and “break a barrier” in the heart of man. As Zack often said, “The only barrier holding you back is yourself.”

Scary test results from testing old climbing ropes

Thanks to Dougald MacDonald for brining this to our attention

Dougald MacDonald runs a great blog The Mountain World. I enjoy Dougald’s writing style and his posts. He recently posted an article from Black Diamond about the breaking strength of old ropes. It is a scary article. See Retire those Ropes.

(A side note here. BD runs a great blog, but it is fancy also. Consequently, many blog readers cannot read it. I do not have time to track down dozens of blogs every morning so BD’s is skipped. Sometimes technology does you in when you are so fancy you cannot be read.)

The result of the testing done by BD was a rope that had repeated falls had a significantly lower breaking strength and not at the knot as you expect. Go to Dougald’s blog The Mountain World to read about these tests.

What is in a Business Name: A Robbery if you are Black Diamond

This if funny, but at the same time scary. KSL TV is reporting in Robber apparently confused over loot at ‘Black Diamond’ company that a man attempted to rob Black Diamond Equipment Company of their precious jewels. Although many of us believe that Black Diamond skis, carabiners and other climbing and mountaineering equipment are precious and sometimes as expensive (J) I don’t think there is a big black market for those stolen jewels that a stupid thief could find.

If you see a Polynesian man in his 20s or 30s about 6 feet 3 inches tall with a medium build and a shaved head with a full-sleeve tattoo on his right arm wearing a large, distinctive square-faced watch on his left wrist driving a white 1990s Ford Escape-type SUV and selling climbing equipment it might be stolen.

Stupid crook!

CELEBRATING OUR 120 YEAR ANNIVERSARY AND THE INTRODUCTION OF A NEW BRAND

Cassin comes to the US

This year marks the 120th anniversary of CAMP Technical Adventure Equipment. The company remains family owned and operated from its headquarters based in the small town of Premana situated in the pre-Alps of Northern Italy. It was here that the great grandfathers of the current management created the first ice axes and crampons for the Italian military. They named their company after their home, Construzione Articoli Montagna Premana, which translates to Articles for Mountaineering Made in Premana. The history of CAMP is rich with famous first ascents, leading product innovations and a dedication to the alpine realm.

CAMP is well known as the leader in lightweight technical adventure equipment with the lightest gear in nearly every category we offer. We are also known for the breadth of our product line. Whether you are a beginning mountaineer on your first foray on Mount Hood or an experienced mountain guide, CAMP has the equipment you need.

In 1997, CAMP acquired another historic Italian climbing company, Cassin. The company was started in 1947 by another Italian and one of the most accomplished climbers of all time, Ricardo Cassin. Since acquiring the company, CAMP has developed Cassin into a premier and highly technical climbing brand. In keeping with the technical reputation of Cassin, the two categories that will be introduced to the US market in 2010 are Big Wall/Aid Climbing equipment and Technical Ice products. What you can expect from CAMP are upgrades to products in nearly every category including the Nano 23 lightweight carabiner and the award-winning new Stratos harness which blends lightweight and functionality in a way never before achieved.

CAMP USA once again invites you to experience our brands in booth #3000 at the 2009 Outdoor Retailer Summer Market. Our new collateral materials will be available and our entire product line will be on display in a new, more interactive way. We are contacting you today to arrange appointments with our experienced and knowledgeable staff.

E-mail a request for an appointment to Tommy Knoll (tommy@camp-usa.com) or call 720-932-779 to set an appointment.

Best Regards,

Tommy Knoll – Managing Director

Australian Climbing Accident investigated by police for criminal charges

An accident in Australia which resulted in a fatality is being investigated by the police for possible criminal charges. Facts about the case are abundant, but so far unofficial.

The issue is the bolts used to bolt a route where incorrect bolts for the rock being climbed. Expansion bolts were used when glue in bolts should have been used. The climber died when he fell and the bolts failed.

The issue that brings this to the police is the climbers who bolted the climb were told not to use expansion bolts. The guidebooks for the area states that expansion bolts should not be used. The climbers used expansion bolts and a climber died because of it. Remember, we are discussing Australian law, not US law.

For more information about this fatality see: Simon Carter’s News-Blog.

To see the original description of the route in Croatian see: Adventure Sport.

Climbing.com Launches Alpine, Bouldering, Sport and Trad Channels

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 02.11.09

Skram Media, publisher of Climbing Magazine, today announced the launch of four targeted content channels on climbing.com, focusing on their readers most committed interests. Navigable from the climbing.com home page, the four channels focus on: alpinism, trad climbing, sport climbing, and bouldering.

Climbing.com is the most content-rich climbing site in the country. By offering our readers a way to organize content by the type of climbing that most interests them, we’ve found another great way to connect readers to their passions,” said Luke Laeser, Online Editor for climbing.com. And, said Matt Samet, editor-in-chief of Climbing, “This only furthers the vision and reach of our brand and the site, the perfect complement to the print version of Climbing.”

“Not only is this great news for our readers, it’s also great news for our advertisers,” said Publisher Mark Crowther. “Alpinists are a segment of the climbing audience our advertisers want to reach. While each of these segments alone has not traditionally been large enough to support a print magazine, online, we can offer advertisers targeted channels to reach alpinists, and also sport climbers, trad climbers and boulderers.”

Crowther added that he is in discussion with a number of leading manufacturers about online channel-sponsorship opportunities. “The Alpine Channel is generating a lot of interest. It’s clear there is a demand in the market now, and with climbing.com reaching over 100,000 unique visitors a month — an audience, for example, sevenfold larger than the total circulation of Alpinist Magazine under its former ownership — we can offer advertisers a more cost-effective way to reach this valuable segment of the climbing audience.”

Advertisers interested in finding out more about climbing.com and channel-sponsorship opportunities should contact Mark Crowther (mark@skrammedia.com) or go to skrammedia.com to download a media kit.

About Climbing.com: Widely regarded as the most trusted name in climbing news, climbing.com is the most visited climbing-content site in the country, and the URL of choice for climbers worldwide.

I write sometimes about emotions: anger, frustration or grief

In this case a family has taken their grief over the loss of a mountain climbing son and created an organization to assist in finding lost climbers. The Jon Francis Foundation was set up to help families search for missing loved ones.

Jon Francis was a 24 year old climber who was missing for a year on an Idahomountain.

English: Emotions associated with anger

Image via Wikipedia

Jon’s father is also writing a book detailing the year long search for his son.

In all the family has undertaken a lot of work to help others they do not know. It has very real and well founded goals of helping others. All of the work is driven over the loss of a loved one. Always remember when you are dealing in this situation you are dealing with more emotion than many people can deal with. This emotion does not fade like most, in some cases it may continue to build.

In this case it has resulted in helping others who may be in the same terrible situation.
