The Zack Martin Breaking Barriers Grant (ZMBB) is a dual-purpose grant fund. The primary objective is humanitarian and the secondary objective is climbing, alpinism and/or exploration in the natural environment. The grantee must meet both objectives and is strongly encouraged to obtain additional funding. The humanitarian objective must be reasonable, and sustainable. American Alpine Club Journal is Looking for your Stories

theclubhouse.png
AAJ_Contribute_Graphic.6.jpgHi James,This year we will be delivering the American Alpine Journal in July, a month earlier—and that means our deadlines are approaching fast!

The AAJ is a collaborative effort, built by climbers and contributors like you from around the world. This means we depend on you and your friends to contribute your eyes and ears.

Get involved: Did you or someone you know do a new route in 2013? Did you climb or hear about a new route that’s regionally significant? Even if it’s only a few pitches long, we want to know about it. Maybe you discovered a new climbing area or did a first free ascent? Foreign expedition? Huge alpine climb? A new big-wall route? Well, the AAJ is the place to document it. Contribute to the 2014 AAJ.

We look forward to building this year’s AAJ with your input. Please contact us no later than January 31.

American Alpine Club looking for Special Volunteers and Interns

We’re Hiring a Volunteer

Editor and Intern

“Men wanted for hazardous journey, small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful, honor and recognition in case of success…”

While we are not recruiting for anything as hazardous as Ernest Shackleton‘s expedition, we are looking for an extraordinary volunteer for a one-of-a-kind position and a talented intern.

Digital Editor

The AAC is seeking someone who is passionate about climbing and the documenation of new routes, expeditions, and accidents. We hope to find a dedicated, long-term volunteer for the new position of Digital Editor, helping AAC staff and other volunteers develop, populate, and curate the AAC’s new publications website, as well as new forms of digital storytelling. We won’t lie: There will be substantial grunt work involved. But you’ll also be a key leader and manager in shaping the future of the AAC’s digital information resources. If you love the AAJ and Accidents, and you love online information, this may be the volunteer opportunity of a lifetime. Previous experience with publishing on WordPress or similar platforms very important. Residence in metro Denver area helpful but not required. The time and flexibility for a significant commitment to AAC publications: essential. If this sounds appealing, contact Dougald MacDonald, AAC Executive Editor. Honor and recognition (and some cool perks, too) are guaranteed.

Publications Intern

Always dreamed of working on the American Alpine Journal or Accidents in North American Mountaineering? Want to learn print and digital publishing skills in the climbing industry? The Publications Intern will work among a dedicated team of climbers and editors to gain lifelong skills in multimedia journalism and publishing. While intern missions vary from day to day, the AAC gives interns the freedom to design work plans that support both the organization and their future aspirations. Interns must work from AAC headquarters in Golden, CO and commit 20 hours/week for four to six months. The Publications Intern position is unpaid; however, interns may receive college credit. Check out the complete description. Applicants should email their resume and cover letter to Erik Rieger, AAC Assistant Editor.

“Men wanted for hazardous journey, small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful, honor and recognition in case of success…”

Ever wonder what treasures are hiding in the AAC archives? Well, wonder no more! Today we launch Explore, and our first-ever online exhibit: Everest 1963: The American Odyssey. Visit this new resource to see special photos, videos, and documents that tell one of the greatest stories in mountaineering history. Explore also features a supplemental Everest gallery with over 200 images from the 1963 expedition. Many of these photos have never been available to the public until now. Please have a look, and let us know what you think.

Four of the seven living members of the 1963 American Mount Everest Expedition are reuniting later this month at the AAC’s 2013 Annual Benefit Dinner in San Francisco. This event marks the first time in decades that Jim Whittaker, Tom Hornbein, Norman Dyhrenfurth, and David Dingman will be together on the same stage, recounting the stories that forever shaped the future of American climbing. Time is running out to buy tickets to this once-in-a-lifetime event—registration closes on February 15. We hope you will join us for this extraordinary evening.

American Alpine Club seeks climbers to join the 2012 International Climbers’ Meet

This message is to let you know about the 2012 International Climbers’ Meet, an event you won’t want to miss. The ICM will be held this October 8-13 in Yosemite Valley, and for $450, you’ll receive:

  • Transportation to and from the Fresno airport, and within Yosemite Valley
  • Six days and nights camping at beautiful and secluded Yellow Pines campground
  • Three catered meals per day
  • Five and a half days of climbing in spectacular Yosemite Valley
  • Nightly campfire for storytelling, socializing, and gerenal carousing
  • An opportunity to partner with other participants or experienced host climbers

Seriously. This has to be the most unique (not to mention affordable) climbing experience you could possibly have in Yosemite. While some climbing ability is necessary, participants of all abilities are welcome to apply; the goal is to host a diverse group of climbing abilities from a multitude of countries, like we did last year.

The application deadline is June 10. Download an AAC Member Application or an International Application, and send the completed forms to Carol at ckotchek@americanalpineclub.org. (You can also contact Carol with your questions.)

See you in Yosemite!

New American Alpine Club Library Book Club starting in Vermont

Our focus is to discuss mountaineering literature, new and old, covering the world’s mountains.

Before our first meeting! – Please email me a list of three books you’d like to suggest we read. I’ll collate these suggestions and bring them to the meeting.

First meeting – Wednesday, February 22nd, 7pm, at the Carpenter Carse Library, 69 Ballards Corner, Hinesburg, VT 05461

(Some folks have indicated they may not be able to make this meeting but are still interested in future meetings.)

Agenda/Goals (this first meeting will be organizational in nature, all you need to read is this email!)

Introductions

Who we are

How we became interested in mountain books

What we’ve enjoyed reading

Where we find our books

Do you consider yourself a collector or casual reader?

Etc.

Decide on what to read, perhaps select first three titles

Decide on frequency of meetings (monthly?)

Select next date options (will need to confirm with Library)

(Please send me other thoughts you may have for our agenda. Thanks!)

Library rules – Non-alcoholic drinks are okay.

We should remove our own trash. (Leave no trace!)

The library has just installed a new carpet so they’d like to keep it as clean as possible.

I plan to arrive about 6:45pm to set up tables and chairs.

Feel free to forward this announcement to anyone you think may be interested. I look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible!

Cheers, Greg
