Fort Collins Needs Your Help to Put Together a Downtown River Project and Kayak Park

9a2e642f-2f70-4fe1-97cc-60b499b2325d.jpg

Contact City Council TODAY!

To Support Downtown Poudre River Project & Kayak Park!

The City Council will vote tomorrow October 7th on the adoption of thePoudre River Downtown Master Plan which includes a proposed kayak park. In a separate agenda item, the Council will also hold a public hearing to take citizen comments on what should be funded in the 2015-16 City Budget.

If you are in favor of having a kayak park in downtown Ft. Collins we urge you to contact City Council at cityleaders TODAY to express your support for the park and to encourage them to fund it in the City Budget Or, better yet, attend the Council meeting tomorrow at 6 pm to express your views. If you will be emailing comments, send them in asap. See Council Agenda for details.

When the first draft of the Poudre River Downtown Master Plan was released last spring, Save The Poudre’s Board had serious reservations with the amount of concrete and hardscaping depicted in the conceptual drawings of the kayak park and did not feel we could endorse the plan as presented. Many others had similar reservations. We met with the design team to express our concerns. The project team heard similar feedback from City Council, several Advisory Boards, and citizens. The team took this feedback to heart, went back to the drawing board, and subsequently released an updated draft Master Plan (http://www.fcgov.com/poudre-downtown/pdf/draft-master-plan9-25-14.pdf) which showed much improvement in terms of “softening” (less concrete, more vegetation) the design for the kayak park. The Save The Poudre Board now feels comfortable to wholeheartedly endorse the project.

The top priority for the Board for this project has always been the health of the river. We feel that the updated plan achieves the three goals of providing kayak play features, improving the river habitat, especially fish passage, and mitigating flood risk. We have urged City Council to fund the park to the maximum extent possible.

Now is the time to move the kayak park across the finish line!

Thank you!

Greg Speer

Vail Acquires Park City Mountain Resort, Doubling Utah Ski Options

0915_FL-park-city-utah-ski-resort_2000x1125-1940x1091.jpgThe just announced and immediate $182 million purchase of Utah’s Park City Mountain Resort (PCMR) is a win-win for skiers in Utah and across the nation. The ski resort was mired in controversy and looked likely to be closed and miss the entire 2014-15 ski season after its owners apparently failed to properly renew their lease on the slopes. “We are very pleased to bring a permanent end to this dispute and provide assurance to the guests and employees of PCMR, and to everyone in the Park City community, that they no longer have to worry about any disruption to the operation of the Resort,” said Rob Katz, chairman and chief executive officer of Vail Resorts (NYSE: MTN).

Snowbird TramThe Cumming family, owner of Park City Mountain Resort parent Powdr Corp., has purchased a majority interest in Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort, the Little Cottonwood Canyon resort said on Monday.

The deal is between the Cumming family and the Bass family. Dick Bass was a co-founder of Snowbird in the 1970s and the family has owned the resort outright since the early part of that decade. Project Learning Tree has a new program: Grandparents as Environmental Educators

Project Learning Tree is piloting a new program: Grandparents as Environmental Educators!

We 10 grandparents to try this and provide feedback! If you have preschool-aged grandchildren, would like to receive a free Environmental Experiences for Early Childhood activity guide and music cd, AND earn a $25 stipend, then call us by 3:00 PM tomorrow-Wednesday! Be a member of our focus group and help us create something new!

Read the announcement below, then call 303-877-7585 immediately. Be one of the first 10 to call to receive the $25 stipend.

Did you play outside when young, not coming in until the dinner? Are you looking for inexpensive, entertaining and educational ways to engage and excite your young grandchildren outdoors without spending money on admission fees all the time? Have you read the very popular book, “Last Child in the Woods: Saving your child from Nature Deficit Disorder”? Do you lament that today’s children and their parents are often times more interested in “screens” –smart phones, video games, tablets, and other electronic toys and distractions?

Celebrate Grandparents’ Month with this workshop designed just for you! You’ll learn simple and fun ideas that will help you and your grandchildren connect with nature while they learn about counting, sorting, matching, colors, sounds, seasons, trees, vocabulary and more.

This hands-on workshop will cover various developmentally appropriate and thematic activities including snacks, literature, crafts, music, and inexpensive, natural materials for exploring and investigating. Take home the easy-to-use activity guide book and music CD filled with great ideas on how to engage three to six year-olds in outdoor exploration and play while helping them gain skills and vocabulary (30,000 words! Really!) to be ready for success in kindergarten and beyond-all in the convenience of your backyard or neighborhood park.

Thanks so much for your help! Share this with other grandparents! There are two workshops this weekend-on at Lookout Mt. Nature Center Saturday from 10-1, and one in Woodland Park, Sunday from 1-4. Go to www.coloradoplt.org for more information!

Altitude is more than you think. Even professional bike racers are worried about the altitude in Aspen

The conversation at the pre-race press conference and the press conference after stage one was the concern about the altitude.

Kiel Reijnen (USA) UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team had this to say about the altitude

“I am by no means a pure sprinter, but this course is a bit of a slap in the face, what a tough way to start a stage race. It’s a really deceptive stage. It’s difficult to control and it’s really unpredictable. I’m still out of breath and it’s been more than an hour since the finish, and I was already at altitude to begin with.”

Alex Howes (USA) Team Garmin-Sharp

“I myself am a victim of the high altitude. It was pretty relaxed for the first third of the race, but that last lap really heated it up and it was just full gas from there on. You see a lot of punch and lift from riders toward the end, and that’s not really something you see at this kind of altitude. It’s pretty exciting to see that out here.”

Colorado Resident Kiel Reijnen Takes Stage 1 of the 2014 USA Pro Challenge

Crowds of Cheering Fans Lined the Streets of Downtown Aspen to Greet the Best Riders in the World

Aspen, Colo. (Aug. 18, 2014) – Set against the beautiful backdrop of Aspen and Snowmass, the 2014 USA Pro Challenge got off to an exciting start with a circuit race of three 22-miles laps that included 2,300 ft. of climbing per lap, creating an aggressive day of racing. Colorado Resident Kiel Reijnen (USA) of UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team took home the stage win, which also puts him in the overall lead heading into the second day of racing.

“This stage was really exciting last year. It was a nail-biter and this year was the same,” said Reijnen. “The USA Pro Challenge is a huge goal for our team. Everyone is here watching and it’s really important to the team we do well here.”

In a close finish, Reijnen took the stage win, followed by Howes in second and Ben Hermans (BEL) of BMC Racing Team in third.

After the conclusion of the first stage of the USA Pro Challenge, Reijnen holds the Smashburger Leader Jersey, Lexus Sprint Jersey and, new for this year, the Colorado National Guard Best Colorado Rider Jersey . Jacques-Maynes has the Sierra Nevada King of the Mountains Jersey and Summerhill was awarded the FirstBank Most Aggressive Rider Jersey. Clement Chevrier (FRA) of Bissell Development Team has the Colorado State University Best Young Rider Jersey heading into Stage 2 tomorrow.

‘ROLLIN’ COAL’ — TALK ABOUT YOUR SECOND-HAND SMOKE

NEW FAD SHOVES ANTI-ENVIRONMENTAL AGENDA DOWN PEOPLE’S LUNGS

5a12e896-de07-4d67-8580-dbcf29392ee6.pngIn reaction to EPA’s increasingly rigid environmental regulations and Obama’s squeeze on carbon emissions, diesel truck drivers are using a technique that originated in truck-pull competitions to deliberately emit clouds of black soot onto individuals and, their favorite target, Prius drivers.

The technique is known as: rolling coal.

So, how do Rollers get huge puffs of grimy smoke to billow out of their exhaust? By modifying their vehicle to dump excess fuel into the motor, which originally served the purpose of allowing truck-pull drivers to carry a weighted sled farther and faster. It’s highly inefficient to say the least, as the black smoke is essentially fuel that hasn’t been burned. The whole arrangement doesn’t come cheap either. Modifying one’s vehicle to roll coal can cost anywhere from $500 to $5,000.

To top that off, it could get you a hefty ticket.

The modification itself violates EPA regulations — making the whole thing quite illegal:

“It is a violation of the [Clean Air Act] to manufacture, sell, or install a part for a motor vehicle that bypasses, defeats, or renders inoperative any emission control device.”(Source)

65b4fb5c-4d7a-41cd-bccc-180a033ae215.jpgAnd that’s exactly what one does to “roll coal.”

But does any of this really matter to coal rollers? Probably not. And since this is supposedly an anti-environmental “protest” the fact that diesel exhaust is one of the nation’s most pervasive sources of toxic air pollution, and black carbon, a component of diesel pollution, is one of the largest drivers of climate change…well, that probably doesn’t matter to them either.

How about the fact that, much like second-hand cigarette smoke, diesel exhaust is carcinogenic? Maybe then they should stop sticking their heads down their smokestacks.

Unlike second-hand cigarette smoke, however, the victims of coal rolling aren’t innocent by-standers. No, they are the targets of this abuse that not only hurts the environment, but makes people sick.

Scientific studies link pollutants in diesel exhaust to a myriad of public health effects, including asthma attacks, heart attacks, stroke, cancer, and premature death.

Also, inhaling diesel fumes is a great way to kill brain cells. (Hmmm…perhaps that’s the explanation.)

5d983231-dfd4-444f-87fa-d6af2cf7b36f.jpgRecently, those who subscribe to this subculture have been getting bold by using social media to promote and parade these ignorant stunts.

Watch one of their many YouTube videos here :Diesels Rolling Coal on PEOPLE 2014 Compilation

What to do besides roll up your windows and turn off your vents:

  • If you’re a member of Better World Club you’re already doing something: BWC is currently configuring a carbon offset plan specifically designed to combat coal rolling.
  • Join the Diesel Clean-up Campaign!Clean Air Task Forceand state-based partners launched the national Diesel Clean-up Campaign. To learn more, and to take action in support of this campaign, please visit theDiesel Clean-up Campaign.

(Almost) TOTAL RECALL: Did Arnold Schwarzenegger Run GM?

RATED NO STARS FOR RECKLESS INACTION

d3df8e1a-c273-46b9-97e6-bd842f2a5175.png

General Motors’ ignition switch scandal is definitely the stuff that movies are made of: deception, moral conundrums, tragic outcomes, a protagonist attempting to overcome a past mistake. The real tragedy, however, is that this isn’t a movie…

The true story, if you recall (OK, we’ll stop with all the homonyms), is that the scandal involved employees who had learned that ignition switches used in Chevrolet Cobalts, Saturn Ions and other GM vehicles were defective but delayed (ahem, failed) to issue recalls for the defect for more than a decade — a delay which sparked U.S. government investigation.

The malfeasance proved simply too great to be swept under the floor mat: the switches — which can be inadvertently shut off when jarred, cutting power to the engine and deactivating air bags — have been linked to at least 13 deaths.

To date, GM has recalled almost 28.5 million cars world wide, an all-time annual record. Remember, this doesn’t mean GM has recalled 28.5 million cars, since some were recalled more than once — but regardless of how you cut it…that’s a lot of cars!

“Few companies in history have ever sold more cars, and few companies have ever demanded as many of them back,” commented John Oliver— Last Week Tonight.

Despite the huge outreach efforts, Forbes reports that, as of June 4, there are approximately 2 million unrepaired cars still tooling around U.S. roads.

The Society of Automotive Engineers found that industry-wide, about 70 percent of recalled cars get repaired. GM’s record is better than most: spokesman Kevin Kelly said an average of 80 percent of recalled cars are fixed within the first year; 85 percent by the second year. In a case like this, where lives are at stake, that just doesn’t seem good enough.

In response to the scandal several bills have been introduced to prevent future misconduct. Hide No Harm Act is one such bill. The bill would make it a crime for corporate officers to knowingly conceal a product defect or corporate action that “poses a danger of death or serious physical injury to consumers and workers.” Executives who do so would face up to five years in prison and potential fines.

In her testimony, GM CEO Mary Barra reiterates that the company’s employees won’t forget the lessons of the recall, and they’re working hard to address the underlying issues.

However, many may have lost faith in GM to police itself. The Hide No Harm Act would work as a safety net, act as remuneration, and represent a reminder in and of itself.

Actions speak loader than words:

New Oral Re-Hydration Mix from Skratch Labs: Rescue Hydration Mix

A new hydration formula designed to treat extreme dehydration in kids and adults!

Skratch Labs: 1-800-735-8904
Rescue Hydration Mix

Rescue Hydration Mix

Rescue Hydration Mix is an all-natural oral rehydration solution, formulated to treat extreme dehydration associated with vomiting and diarrhea in kids and adults. We created it when we couldn’t find anything similar at our local market or pharmacy that wasn’t chock full of artificial sweeteners, flavoring agents, and chemicals.

While Rescue Hydration was developed to rehydrate us when we aren’t feeling our best, at 750 mg of sodium per 16 oz serving, the benefit for treating dehydration after pushing a little too hard on hot summer days makes it a great complement to our Exercise Hydration Mix, especially for those who find themselves saltier than others. And while we don’t encourage anyone to get sick on purpose, a number of our first test batches, were used with great success to help recover from a few late nights of revelry fueled by a few too many. So keep on playing hard these hot summer days and nights. Rescue Hydration Mix has got you covered. Alliance for a Better UTAH: great group fighting to protect Utah from Utahans

Alliance for a Better UTAHYou did it. On Monday we delivered nearly 3,000 signatures to BLM Director Juan Palma, asking the BLM to hold accountable Phil Lyman and his friends for breaking the law by riding roughshod through Recapture Canyon.Director Palma assured us that he is working to hold the protesters accountable. The BLM is preparing to release a report they will then deliver to the US Attorney’s Office in Utah. We anticipated this would happen by directing our petition not only to the BLM, but to US Attorney David Barlow as well. We will follow this every step of the way.

In the meantime, we hope you’ll scroll down to catch up on the latest from the Alliance for a Better UTAH. If you like what you see, chip in a few bucks by clicking here. We depend on donations from supporters like you to keep our elected leaders honest.

Happy Fourth of July,

Everyday Kid Phil Gaimon Rides Off the Couch into a Pro Cycling Contract

Boulder, CO, USA – May 6, 2014 – Professional cyclist Phil Gaimon has written a book telling the true story of his unlikely transformation from fat kid to professional bike racer. Pro Cycling on $10 a Day: From Fat Kid to Euro Pro, is now available in bookstores, bike shops, and online. Preview Gaimon’s debut book at http://www.velopress.com/phil.

Plump, grumpy, slumped on the couch, and going nowhere fast at age 16, Phil Gaimon begin riding a bicycle with the grand ambition of shedding a few pounds before going off to college. He soon fell into racing and discovered he was a natural, riding his way into a pro contract after just one season despite utter ignorance of a century of cycling etiquette. A few hardscrabble seasons later, Gaimon was offered a contract to race in 2014 for Team Garmin-Sharp, an elite cycling team that competes at the sport’s highest level.

Pro Cycling on $10 a Day is a true story, a guide, and a warning to aspiring racers who dream of joining the professional racing circus. Gaimon’s adventures in road rash serve as a hilarious and cautionary tale of frustrating team directors and broken promises. His education in the ways of the peloton, his discouraging negotiations for a better contract, his endless miles crisscrossing America in pursuit of race wins, and his conviction that somewhere just around the corner lies the ticket to the big time fuel this tale of hope and ambition from one of cycling’s best storytellers.

Pro Cycling on $10 a Day chronicles the racer’s daily lot of blood-soaked bandages, sleazy motels, cheap food, and overflowing toilets. But Gaimon also celebrates the true beauty of the sport and the worth of the journey, proving in the end that even among the narrow ranks of world-class professional cycling, there will always be room for a hardworking outsider.

Pro Cycling on $10 a Day: From Fat Kid to Euro Pro Phil Gaimon Paperback with b&w photographs throughout.
6″ x 9″, 312 pp., $18.95, 9781937715243

Phil Gaimon is a professional cyclist for Team Garmin-Sharp, a writer, and an entrepreneur who retired from laziness and computer games in 2004 in favor of riding a bike to lose weight. On a whim, he started racing and soon discovered that he was a natural. Phil advanced rapidly through the amateur ranks and turned professional in his second full year. He slowly learned the rules and clawed his way to the top of the American pro ranks, joining Garmin-Sharp in 2014. He maintains a website, http://www.Philthethrill.net, where he chronicles his ceaseless pursuit of the best cookies and milk in America, and tweets at http://www.twitter.com/philgaimon.

Can’t wait to read it.

Providence Cyclo-cross Festival Expo ‘Dealer Day’ Seen as Alternative to Interbike

logo.jpg

Received this email today. Splintering the industry is not good for anyone.

Providence Cyclo-cross Festival Expo Includes ‘Dealer Day’

Event Seen as Affordable Alternative to Interbike

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – (May 6, 2014) – The Providence Cyclo-cross Festival aims to capitalize on its stature as a ‘must race’ event and draw exhibitors and retailers to it’s expanded expo. The newly introduced Dealer Day takes place on Friday, October 3, 2014 and adds an additional incentive for shops and manufacturers to attend the cornerstone of the Holy Week of Cyclo-cross.

“We’re working with The Bike Cooperative and select exhibitors to create a Friday event that focuses on the dealers. Many Northeast shop owners are too busy to leave their shops in September, their last great month before the off-season, to travel to Interbike. We’re offering a cost-effective means for manufacturers to reach them,” said event director Richard Fries. “Conversely, for the shops, we have an event that allows them to load up their staff in a van, drive a few hours to Providence, demo new product, attend some clinics, and maybe jump in a race. And they’re back at their shop in time to open on Saturday morning.”

Affordable display rates, an impeccable venue and a location within a short distance from major metropolitan centers like Boston and New York sweeten the deal.

“We want to offer an expo that is affordable for the bike manufacturers. We want the exhibitors for the energy and excitement they bring to the Festival, not their dollars. Whether you’re coming in with a full trailer or a small booth at the Builders’ Ball, Providence is a great value for all companies, large and small,” said Fries.

Space is limited and the expo is expected to sell out. Discounts are available for early registrants and space is allocated on a first come, first served basis. Pricing and registration are available at jw or Nick Keough at nickeough

ABOUT THE PROVIDENCE CYCLO-CROSS FESTIVAL: Selected as “The Best” of American cyclo-cross by Outside Magazine and as “The 2013 Domestic Event of the Year” by the editors of Cyclocross Magazine, The Providence Cyclo-cross Festival will be held Oct. 3-5, 2014, in historic Roger Williams Park. The internationally sanctioned event has drawn athletes from more than 20 nations. Additional attractions include the Divine Youth initiative, a consumer expo, food courts, the Harpoon Beer Garden, the New England Builders’ Ball, and Gran Fondo New England. May 21 Workshop-Build Skills to Work Collaboratively on Environmental & Natural Resource Management

As part of the 2014 Network Leadership Training Academy (NLTA – see below for more info), we will be offering a half-day workshop focused on Network Leadership for Environmental and Natural Resource Management

May 21, 2014, 9-11:30am in Denver, CO. CAEE

Network Leadership for Environmental and Natural Resource Management, 9:30-11am, $25: There are growing concerns over how to manage the environment to protect public health, mitigate disasters, and to meet the demands of growing populations for water, food, recreation and energy supplies. Yet developing such networks and sustaining them can be particularly challenging, especially where organizational interests and goals are not aligned or are in conflict. Join Tanya Heikkila in this workshop to learn the organization, design, and characteristics of success of networks for collaborative environmental natural resource management. The lessons from this workshop will draw from an extensive body of research and experience on environmental networks and collaboration, and from the interactions among network participants, to identify practical leadership skills to help overcome some of these challenges.

Tanya Heikkila is an Associate Professor at the University of Colorado Denver, School of Public Affairs. Dr. Heikkila’s research expertise is in institutions for coordinating groundwater and surface water in the western United States, interstate water conflicts and cooperation, the organization of collaborative ecosystem restoration programs, as well as the performance of special purpose governments.

See attached flyer for more information, or go here. Please forward to any colleagues/groups that you think might be interested in this workshop, or the NLTA.

About the 2014 NLTA: Many people today are deeply involved in the network way of working, but are struggling to find tools and a place to build skills and a community for this new way of connecting across boundaries. This workshop provides conversations about network leadership, activities and exercises to share and demonstrate skills and ideas, and practical tools to translate back to practice. The NLTA is a place where public sector leaders gather to learn, share ideas, and develop skills for engaging in collaboration and partnerships across sectors. A particular focus of the NLTA is on engaging community partners both in program activities, but also evaluation and research. We will cover several methodologies and models for accomplishing these goals, including Community Impact Models, Community Based Participatory Research, Systems Building, and Social Network Analysis, among others. Attendees are engaged in this type of work from multiple sectors including Health, Public Health, Education, Environment, Disaster/Emergency Management, Criminal Justice, among other fields. The workshop primary focus is on building, managing, and evaluating effective networks. This year’s academy will be held from May 19-21, 2014 in Denver, CO at the University of Colorado Denver (downtown campus).

What will you do at the NLTA? The agenda for the 2014 NLTA is packed full of opportunities for attendees to share their own experiences and skills, interaction with the leading trainers and thinkers in networks leadership through presentation and consultation, and topic specific workshops to develop a “network of networkers” in your specific field. Each part of the NLTA is led by a recognized leader in the field and will be a variety of small group, breakout, and large group interactions. A summary of the agenda:

Society of Outdoor Recreation Professionals is proud to present the 2014 National Outdoor Recreation Conference

conf_header_120413.jpg

“Thriving in a New Economic Reality”

The early bird deadline is April 18 – register now and save

The Society of Outdoor Recreation Professionals is proud to present the 2014 National Outdoor Recreation Conference. This year we are featuring presentations that demonstrate how you are adapting and thriving in our new economic reality. You will learn about innovative partnerships, diversifying funding sources, use of technology to streamline, entrepreneurial solutions, adaptive reuse of aging facilities, cultivating political and community support, and other case studies that present new ideas and tools to succeed in today’s economic reality.

Session Spotlight

Communicating with our many stakeholders is an important but sometimes challenging task of a successful outdoor recreation project. Learn from several SORP members and their colleagues about the different approaches they’ve taken in listening and learning from their stakeholders.

Benchmarking: The Art of Talking to People on Benches in an Effort to Keep Them Happy

Intercept surveys are an incredibly useful tool for gaining a solid understanding of existing park user’s perspectives and desires as well as understanding who your agency is currently serving. Intercept surveys generate the type of information professionals crave when developing system plans, master plans, and project plans.

However, this level of outreach can be awkward (walking up to strangers and asking for all kinds of personal information – yikes!!!) and intimidating (resources, bias, data entry/analysis…where do you start???). And what do you do with the information once you have it?

This presentation will walk you through parallel studies conducted in 2008 and 2013 across a system of 19 park units encompassing 27,000+ acres whose annual visitation exceeds 5 million and discuss how to share and use the survey findings to guide thoughtful decisions and long-term plans. Join SORP members Thomas Mercier, Research & Evaluation Coordinator and Kelly Grissman, Director of Planning, Three Rivers Park District to hear about examples that will provide insight on the realistic expectations of the resources required and project outcomes.

A Road Runs Through It

Park planning can be greatly affected by past history. Strong and independent pioneers settled the Ozarks in the mid-1800s. A hardscrabble existence fraught with peril refined the Ozark character. Today, some descendants are thriving and others continue to get by in a beautiful and unforgiving landscape. For all, their ties to the land remain strong and independent, helping further shape today’s Ozark culture. At Current River State Park, local perspectives have been shaped by experiences with the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. Not all of the experiences have been regarded as positive by the populace. The long-festering cultural clash came to a head when local authorities unilaterally pushed a road into the new state park. Join SORP member Bill Bryan, Director of Missouri State Parks, and learn how Missouri reconciled with park neighbors to move forward with the new park even though A Road Runs Through It.

Building Your Plan for Community Engagement and Outreach

The East Bay Regional Park District is comprised of over 113,000 acres in 65 parks and over 1,200 miles of trails within Alameda and Contra Costa County in California. The district, serving the Bay Area for 80 years, is dedicated to improving access to and use of the parks by members of groups that are underrepresented, such as persons with disabilities, the economically disadvantaged and elderly park visitors.

In early 2011, the district opened the Tidewater Boating Center which was funded by State Prop 40 monies to provide outdoor recreational opportunities to under-resourced populations. Through successful partnerships with low-income schools, cities and local non-profit organizations, the district has been able to increase access and awareness of outdoor recreation programs and services in the regional parks. Join SORP member Anne Kassebaum, and her colleagues from the East Bay Regional Park District as you learn how to develop strategies to successfully engage under-resourced populations, develop deep engagement experiences for youth and families in the outdoors and how to utilize community mapping to develop strategic partnerships for engagement and outreach.

Seeking public input through online surveys for resource management planning

Public input is an important factor when preparing a state park Resource Management Plan (RMP), the purpose of which is to document management responsibilities for balancing the use of water and land resources related to recreation. With the growing public demand for outdoor recreation, it is critical to take the public’s interests into consideration. Survey participants were obtained from various sources including Facebook, cabin and campground reservation, golf course membership, and state park friend groups. The SERVQUAL (Service quality survey) was modified to assess park visitors’ desired and perceived service quality for the Oklahoma State Park system. The results provide managers and decision-makers valuable long-term direction and guidelines for effective and efficient management of natural resources. The presentation focuses on the process of obtaining survey participants and developing the survey instrument. You won’t want to miss this session from SORP members Stella Liu and Nicky Wu from Oklahoma State University.

Join the Society of Outdoor Recreation Professionals for their 2014 National Outdoor Recreation Conference May 13-16 in San Francisco, California. Outdoor recreation professionals from local, special district, state, and federal agencies; private sector firms and consultants; university faculty and students; and non-profit organizations gather annually to share success stories, collaborate on challenging situations, and strategize new solutions.
