2012 National Outdoor Book Award Winners

Great Reading!

Outdoor Literature

clip_image001[4]

Winner.  Almost Somewhere: Twenty-Eight Days on the John Muir Trail.  By Suzanne Roberts.  University of Nebraska PressISBN 9780803240124.

In the summer of 1993, author Suzanne Roberts and two other women set out on a month-long backpack trip in California’s Sierra Mountains.  Almost Somewhere is Robert’s introspective and no-holds-barred account of that journey and the interactions between the three women.  What emerges is a revealing and insightful coming-of-age portrait of women of the post baby boom generation.  Roberts obsesses with her weight, competes openly with other women for men, and grapples with conflicted views of sex and relationships.  One of the other women struggles with bulimia.  This is life in an outdoor setting from a feminine perspective:  anxiety over strange men met along the way and the challenges of long days on the trail—can Robert’s weakening knees and the health of her bulimic friend hold up to the end?  The dialog, the imagery, and the story are so well done and so absorbing that men and women of all generations will find it a satisfying and fulfilling literary treat.

clip_image002[4]

Winner.  The Ledge: An Adventure Story of Friendship and Survival on Mount Rainier.  By Jim Davidson and Kevin Vaughan.  Ballantine Books.
ISBN 9780345523198.

The Ledge is story telling at its finest.  Jim Davidson is descending from a climb of Mount Rainier when he plunges into a crevasse, pulling his partner in with him.  Davidson survives the fall, but unknown to him at the time, his pack has stopped him, wedging between two walls of ice.  Below him is an abyss.  Shortly after he stops, a small avalanche of snow covers him completely.  Then his partner hurtles down and lands on top.  Somehow Davidson must dig himself out of the snow, provide aid to his critically injured partner, and plan a way to climb out—all the while, delicately balanced on his pack.  His is a struggle that involves all of his faculties and which alternates between hope, despair, and terror.  From start to finish, this is a story that will hold you spellbound.

Honorable Mention.  Before They’re Gone:  A Family’s Year-Long Quest to Explore America’s Most Endangered National Parks.  By Michael Lanza.  Beacon Press.  ISBN 9780807001196.

Michael Lanza is a skilled wordsmith and his finely fashioned handiwork is on full display in Before They’re Gone.  Lanza takes his wife and two young children to some of the country’s most famous National Parks.  They hike, sea kayak, climb, canoe and cross-country ski.  It’s a heartwarming narrative of a family and their explorations of wild places.  It’s also a cautionary story of what might happen, and is happening, to those spectacular places that they visit as the earth continues to warm.

clip_image004[20]

Natural History Literature

clip_image005[4]

Winner.  The Forest Unseen:  A Year’s Watch in Nature. By David George Haskell.  Viking.  ISBN 9780670023370.

One square meter.  That’s what Forest Unseen is about: one square meter of a Tennessee forest.  But in George Haskell’s able hands, that’s all that is needed to reveal a world of wonder and magic.  An engaging and poetic writer, Haskell takes us on a journey through the seasons, documenting the changes in an old growth forest and describing the many ecological processes occurring there.  Through Haskell’s words, the forest comes alive and seeps gently and unobtrusively into our conscience.  Haskell has done it masterfully—writing with a quiet humility and a deceptive simplicity that mirrors the life in his small patch of the natural world.

History/Biography

clip_image006[4]

Winner.  Buried in the Sky: The Extraordinary Story of the Sherpa Climbers on K2’s Deadliest Day.  By Peter Zuckerman and Amanda Padoan.  W. W. Norton.  ISBN 9780393079883.

Buried in the Sky is a significant departure for mountaineer literature.  In a reversal of perspective, the book chronicles the story of climbing K2 from the Sherpas’ point of view.  What happened on K2 in 2008 shocked the mountaineering world.  Eleven climbers died and three others were seriously injured.  It’s through the eyes of Sherpas that Peter Zuckerman and Amanda Padoan tell the story of those fateful hours on the mountain.  Impeccably researched, the two authors travelled to Nepal and Pakistan where they conducted interviews with Sherpa climbers, their families, relatives and friends.  They deal with the worries of Sherpa wives and the yearly tragedies weathered by their close-knit families.  It’s a book that finally humanizes the unsung heroes of the mountaineering world and their hopes and dreams for a better life.

clip_image007[4]

Winner.  Anything Worth Doing: A True Story of Friendship and Tragedy on the Last of the West’s Great Rivers. By Jo Deurbrouck.  Sundog Book Publishing.  ISBN 9780985257804.

Jo Deurbrouck brings to life the story of two men who launch a small wooden dory in the roiling waters of Idaho’s Salmon River.  Their plan was to float all night and all the next day in an attempt to set a 24-hour speed record.  In this highly creative and exceptionally well written account, Deurbrouck traces the lives of these two men: one an aging, bear of a man, a Viet Nam era veteran and sometimes recluse river guide whose past includes boxing and ballet dancing;  and the other a fit, young man, a rising star among river runners, full of ideas and ambitions.  They put on the river in peak flood and are flung downstream, maneuvering their small boat through churning rapids, dodging boiling holes, and fending off massive logs caught in the current with them. You’ll find yourself glued to the pages as Deurbrouch deftly steers the narrative to a building climax.  This is an impressive piece of work and a welcomed addition to river literature and lore.

Design and Artistic Merit

clip_image008[4]

Winner. Design and Artistic Merit.  Winner.  Beneath the Cold Seas: The Underwater Wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. By David Hall.  University of Washington Press and Greystone Books.  ISBN 978022295991160.

This book is a work of art from every possible angle—from the exquisite photographs, to the book’s design, to its flawless printing and production process.  There’s no other way to describe it:  David Hall has created a masterpiece.  It’s not something that came easy.  His underwater photographic technique had been painstakingly developed and refined over years of work.  And what a difficult environment in which to work:  diving in bitter cold waters, working in a neutrally buoyant state without a tripod, not having the ability to use telephoto lenses (because of the turbidity of the water), and dealing with a limited amount of time (due to air and nitrogen concerns).  Hall has everything right in this book.  There is nothing extraneous, and nothing missing.  This is a complete and moving immersion in the breathtaking underwater world of the Pacific Northwest.

clip_image009[4]

Winner. For the Birds: The Life of Roger Tory Peterson. By Peggy Thomas.  Illustrated by Laura Jacques.  Calkins Creek.  ISBN 9781590787649.

For the Birds is a delightful biography for children from 7 to 11 years of age.  Who is it about?
Why . . . none other than “Professor Nuts Peterson.”  Professor Nuts, who might carry a snake in his pocket or a bird’s egg in his hat, is the American artist and passionate bird lover who created the Peterson Field Guides.  His guides weren’t designed for scientists and specialists.  Rather, they were for everyone, making it easier for adults—and kids of all stripes and ages—to identifying birds, animals and plants.  Author Peggy Thomas quite handedly describes Peterson’s life from his childhood, to his success as an illustrator, and to his work as a conservationist. Fitting winningly with the text are bright and cheery illustrations by Laura Jacques.

 Nature and the Environment

clip_image010[4]

Winner. The Melting Edge:  Alaska at the Frontier of Climate Change. By Michael Collier.  Alaska Geographic Association.  ISBN 9780982576519.

There is no better place in the United States to observe the effects of climate change than Alaska:  Glaciers are retreating, permafrost is thawing, and coastal areas are eroding.  While much has been written about the subject, author Michael Collier takes things a step further and shows us the consequences of global warming by the use of colorful and instructive photographs.  It’s a complex subject, but Collier provides concrete examples and boils it down to the essentials.  In the process, he takes us to the far corners of Alaska to learn from the scientists studying the effects of a changing climate and from the people living it day to day.

clip_image011[4]

Honorable Mention.  Spring Wildflowers of the Northeast:  A Natural History.  By Carol Gracie.  Princeton University Press.  ISBN 9780691144665.

Spring Wildflowers is as elegant as the flowers found within its pages.  That’s due to the multi-talented Carol Gracie who is a writer, a botanist and a photographer.  In the book, she describes a host of Northeastern plants, but she doesn’t stop at the usual botanical boundaries.  Unique among plant guides, she goes on to include what species pollinate each plant.  She further firmly places each plant into the context of its habitat, what animals consume it, how it has been used as a medicinal plant.  Gracie’s book is a noteworthy achievement and quite effectively broadens our thinking about plants to include their many-sided relationship with all aspects of the ecosystem.

clip_image012[4]

Honorable Mention.  Polar Bears: A Complete Guide to Their Biology and Behavior.  By Andrew E. Derocher.  Photographs by Wayne Lynch.  The John Hopkins University Press.  ISBN  9781421403052.

There’s a certain attraction to polar bears, and Andrew Derocher’s book adds to that attraction by deepening our understanding of these animals and the impact that human activity is having upon them.  Derocher lays out for us a comprehensive review of work done on these great mammals including their biology, ecology and behavior.  The text is supplemented by stunning photographs by Wayne Lynch who has spent decades following the bears.   It all works excellently together—photos and text—and the reader comes away with a renewed appreciation for one of nature’s most charismatic carnivores.

Winner. AMC Guide to Outdoor Digital Photography: Creating Great Nature and Adventure Photos. By Jerry Monkman.  Appalachian Mountain Club.  ISBN 9781934028506.

If you’ve been prospecting for just the right book on outdoor digital photography, look no further.  You’ll strike pay dirt with this new Appalachian Mountain Club guide.  Accomplished photographer Jerry Monkman who has worked for a variety of national outdoor and wildlife magazines, nicely elaborates on the subject in one easily readable and visually instructive book.  The book covers equipment, lenses, lighting, composition, exposure, and processing software.  The text is supplemented with case studies and expert advice.  This is outdoor photography after all, and Monkman doesn’t leave out suggestions on taking photos in adverse weather.  You’ll find plenty to be mined from this fine reference, and you won’t even need a pick and shovel.

clip_image014[4]

Winner.  Backpacker Magazine’s Complete Guide to Outdoor Gear Maintenance and Repair: Step by Step Techniques to Maximize Performance and Save Money.  By Kristin Hostetter.  Falcon Guides.  ISBN 9780762778317.

If you were to search the outdoor world for someone to write about repairing gear, you wouldn’t find anyone better suited for the job than Kristin Hostetter.  Hostetter has been Backpacker Magazine’s gear editor since 1994, and she knows a thing or two about the subject.  In the Complete Guide, Hostetter has consolidated her wide ranging knowledge into one comprehensive volume covering the repair of all sorts of equipment:  boots, packs, sleeping bags, clothing, stoves—and oh, how could we forget? —she also includes a special chapter on what can be done with a roll of duct tape.  The information from her book is particularly useful when you’re out in the field.  Stuff happens out there, and with Hostetter’s clear and helpful instructions you’ll be back on the trail in no time.  Add it all up, throw in the book’s classy and intelligent design, and this guide scores right at the top of its class.

Winner.  Grand Canyoneering:  Exploring the Rugged Gorges and Secret Slots of the Grand Canyon.  By Todd Martin.  Todd’s Desert Hiking Guide.  ISBN 9780978961435.

If you’re into canyoneeering, Grand Canyoneering is a must-have.  Handsomely illustrated with color photographs throughout, this outstanding guide includes thorough explanations of over 100 different trips into the tributary drainages and ravines of the Grand Canyon.  Trip descriptions are supplemented with topographic maps, key GPS coordinates, and information on water sources, specialized equipment and natural history.  Todd Martin writes in a comfortable, conversational style which makes the guide a pleasure to read; yet, at the same time, he is exacting when it comes to describing canyon routes.  The sheer volume of material alone is impressive, and combined with the photos, maps, and text, it’s decidedly a tour de force of outdoor guidebooks.

SGMA Changes its name after 107 years to Sports and Fitness Industry Association (SFIA)

Dear Members and Friends of SGMA:

For the past 107 years, the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA) has been your source of research-based knowledge, a leader in professional development, the sports and fitness industry’s voice and advocate on Capitol Hill, and the community on which you rely to address common challenges and take collective action.

We all recognize the rapid and deep change our industry has experienced in recent years. As our industry evolves, our organization has identified the need to realign our positioning, communications and service offerings. Thus, following careful deliberations based on an extensive strategic planning process, the SGMA Board of Directors has approved a complete rebranding process for our Association. I’d like to walk you through some of these exciting developments:

Transition of Our Name – SGMA to SFIA

The SGMA Board of Directors has approved a new name for our organization: Sports & Fitness Industry Association, with the acronym SFIA.

Our research and personal experiences indicate that common understandings of “sporting goods” and “manufacturers” have evolved while our terminology has not. Thus, the change from “Sporting Goods” to “Sports & Fitness” is more definitive about our inclusion of brands connected to fitness and active lifestyle products. The change from “Manufacturers” to “Industry” embraces a broader community including suppliers, brands, major sports and fitness retailers and partners – a much clearer reflection of our current and future membership. This is not a change in philosophy for our organization as we already have many members in these categories. It is simply a more accurate and transparent indication of the industry segments that we serve. And while we continue to embrace, celebrate and support the many companies who manufacture their own products, our general membership (including many of those manufacturers) has indicated that there is a need to move beyond the traditional label of a “manufacturers” association.

Formal Ratification of the Name Change

While the Board has approved all of the elements connected to the overall rebranding, changing the name of SGMA requires a vote of the membership, which will be done by proxy and ratified at the SGMA Annual meeting this fall.

This Is About Much More Than a Name Change: New Industry Initiatives

This rebranding process is about much more than a name change. It starts with the basics—a laser focus on the new mission statement developed by our Board of Directors: To Promote Sports and Fitness Participation and Industry Vitality. It is a reflection of a broad Board-driven, multi-year strategic planning process that instills a disciplined focus on four core offerings: Thought Leadership & Events, Public & Industry Affairs, Member Services and Research Insights.

Specifically, we are working hard to enhance our member offerings with the launch of several initiatives including:

  • New Thought Leadership initiatives including the 2013 SFIA Industry Leaders Summit, scheduled for September 25-26, 2013.

  • A national campaign to grow sport and fitness participation: PHIT America

  • A new “member friendly’” website: http://www.SFIA.org

  • A comprehensive SFIA Supplier Directory

  • A groundbreaking new “Grassroots Sports Participation in America” research report

  • Content enhancements and design updates to our weekly e-newsletter, InBrief

  • Major upgrades to our Product Testing member benefit

You will learn more about these initiatives in the coming weeks. In the meantime, for more information, please visit the FAQ section on our website.

I want to emphasize that the foundation of our organization and the core constituents who benefit from their affiliation with our organization remains the same. The rebranding process simply helps us articulate a more accurate picture of who we represent and how we bring value to those entities while simultaneously identifying our members’ most pressing issues and providing resources that help address those problems.

In short, this is a very exciting time in the long, proud history of our trade association. The rebranding process is an important example of our ongoing commitment to fulfilling our organization’s mission. We remain universally committed to our most significant priority: to continue developing and delivering products, resources and events to our members that help enhance their businesses. The upcoming name change and the rollout of our new services and initiatives are a strong reflection of our continued commitment to fulfilling our leadership role in this great industry.

Thank you for your continued investment in SGMA as we transition to the newly branded Sports & Fitness Industry Association. As always, our staff remains proud to serve the sports and fitness community and the outstanding individuals who work in this industry.

Kids get hurt and some kids die

If you want your kids to play sports, enjoy the outdoors, and have fun, you have to accept the fact your kid will suffer an injury and some of those injuries are fatal.

If parents continue to sue volunteers and programs for their kids injuries, there are not going to be programs for kids. The facts of life say that the cost of providing a program for a kid by volunteers is going to reach a maximum, and those programs will end.

Most programs provide insurance for their volunteers. No matter how the coverage is provided, the volunteers own homeowner’s policy is the primary general liability policy. Eventually, when applying for homeowners insurance, there may be a question about volunteer activities. There is already a question about whether or not you have been sued in the past.

What about the time issues for a new volunteer. You want to be an assistant coach for your kids and the neighbor kids. You go to the first meeting and find out you have to take 20 hours of training before you can attend the first practice and several more hours after that. Is it worth the effort?

Think about the effects on our economy. No more free, after school, babysitting. Parents will have to trust their kids at home by themselves rather than sending them off to a volunteer.

Better, programs are going to require parents to be at all activities, including meetings and practices.

Seriously, would you take a kid backpacking knowing you be sued when you get home because he or she tripped over a stove and spilt hot pasta water on their foot. (Been there, took them to the hospital.)

So?

1.   Programs are going to have to step up to the bar and require parents to sign releases and/or acknowledgment of risk forms, which state:

a.   The parent is aware and understands all the risks of the sport or activity.

b.   The parent has watched all the required videos online.

c.   The parents agree to arbitration or mediation for all disputes and where applicable a limitation of damages.

2.   Volunteers are going to have to make the programs have an attorney prepare a release.

3.   Volunteers need to make sure they buy the maximum amount of liability coverage for their homeowner’s policy they can.

a.   You may consider an umbrella insurance policy to provide more coverage.

4.   You need to meet with parents and create minimums. If not enough parents are available for practices or games, the kids are sent home. If you say I need 10 parents to go with the 20 kids on this weekend camping trip and nine show up, you and the nine parents get a free weekend after you take all 10 kids home.

5.   If you are a volunteer or a parent, consider having all parents and volunteers take the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Guide to Safe Scouting (GSS) program. More information on the BSA GSS can be found here.

a.   The BSA GSS safeguards kids but it will also protect you.

Don’t stick your neck out for the kids when their parents may chop them off.

What do you think? Leave a comment.

What’s new at Colorado Ski Resorts for the 2012-13 Ski Season

Unrivaled Guest Experience at the Core of Colorado Ski Country USA Resort Enhancements

For the 2012-13 ski season, Colorado Ski Country USA (CSCUSA) resorts are dedicated to solidifying Colorado as the top ski vacation destination, including exceeding guest expectations for services, amenities and resort facilities.

Colorado is synonymous with skiing because guests know they will find consistent powder snow framed by top-notch services. As part of their commitment, resorts are enhancing their profiles this season, adding new infrastructural components that will make visitors’ time on the slopes more efficient and rewarding. Improved snow making and maintenance at a number of resorts is calculated to enhance skiing and riding, while guest-facing developments such as new restaurants, increased terrain and additional built-in activities will supplement the overall guest experience.

These capabilities, along with numerous other additions and renovations throughout Colorado Ski Country, are intended to usher in a new era of guest service and help maintain Colorado’s position as the nation’s leading state for winter activities. Below is a complete round-up of the 2012-13 capital improvements.

New Infrastructural Improvements

Howelsen Hill, the oldest continuous resort in operation west of the Mississippi, is building a $1.75 million HS45 (Hill Size 45) ski jump that will be fully functional in summer and winter. Owned by the City of Steamboat Springs, Howelsen anticipates finishing this intensive project prior to this winter. When completed, the HS45 Ski Jump’s plastic surface will be sprayed with water, enabling skiers to slide on the surface and allowing youth level competitors to jump at Howelsen Hill in both the summer and winter. This will provide training for young athletes from around the nation to be competitive on a national and international basis.

Wolf Creek’s new Race Hutch will debut this season, located at the bottom of Charisma where the race-course finishes. Race equipment, fencing, gates, sound system and banners will be located in this small building. Also, new water-free composting restrooms will be installed at the base of the Alberta Lift replacing the current temporary port-a-potties.

Snowmass will add 230 acres of new terrain on Burnt Mountain this season, bringing total skiable acreage to 3,362 acres, making it the second largest ski area in Colorado. The terrain on Burnt Mountain features rolling, low-angle meadows, glades and spectacular views into the valleys between Snowmass and Buttermilk.

Loveland’s new on-mountain developments include complete renovations on The Ptarmigan Roost Cabin at the top of Chair 2 and The Rockhouse at the top of Chair 1. The interiors have been redone and the decks expanded to create more space for skiers and riders to take a break between runs and enjoy the views. The resort will also reconfigure Chair 2 to add an off-load station below the current re-load station, allowing the area to offer early and late season lessons for beginner skiers and snowboarders when Loveland Valley is closed.

In addition to its new on-mountain developments, Loveland will utilize its new snowcat to take guests up to The Ridge, a free ride designed to grant convenient access to its wider terrain.

Monarch received Forest Service acceptance of its new master plan last November. The Base Lodge expansion and remodel is the first project, a $2.3 million investment. An additional 16,000 square feet of space will enhance the facilities and services. The improvements include rejuvenation of the entire lodge, including creating indoor stairs to all levels, a handicap elevator, a fire suppression system and more seating throughout the Lodge.

Guests will notice the newly expanded Base Lodge upon arrival. On the right side of the building at the parking level there is now a direct-to-mountain walk-thru entrance.

As part of its commitment to improving the experience for beginners and introducing newbies to the sport, Arapahoe Basin is adding an $80,000 conveyor lift in the Pika Place Learning Arena. Already home to North America’s highest terrain park, the resort will prepare to open the 2012-13 season with the addition of a beginner-level terrain park, called Ace’s Kids Park, which will be adjacent to the new lift.

Winter Park Resort will add a new Tube Park for the upcoming season. This family-friendly amenity will give guests yet another exciting activity in the Village during the day and into the evening. Opening in December 2012, the new park will feature four lanes, conveyor lift access and a state-of-the-art warming structure with restrooms, hot chocolate service and flexible space available for groups.

Launched for the summer of 2012, Copper Mountain’s newest attraction – the Alpine Rush Zip Line – will continue to operate throughout the 2012-13 winter ski season. This family-friendly ride features a unique dueling-design which allows two guests to fly side-by-side as they soar 30 feet above Copper’s bustling West Lake ice skating rink. The flight travels 300 feet across the lake, reaching speeds of up to 30mph. Alpine Rush makes the perfect addition to Copper’s intimate, pedestrian-only Village, which also features restaurants, shopping and comfortable lodging, all within walking distance to the lifts.

Snowmaking Improvements

Colorado is known for having consistent snow conditions and the 2012-13 season will be no exception as a number of resorts invested in snowmaking equipment. Arapahoe Basin has purchased a new $250,000 snowcat, and Winter Park Resort will replace two of its snowcats, resulting in improved snow maintenance at both resorts. Steamboat Resort will add a new Bison groomer to its fleet, expanding and upgrading snowmaking capabilities, and will also add new 4-stroke energy efficient snowmobiles. Howelsen Hill will be introducing a new Super PoleCat snow gun to facilitate the hill’s snowmaking ability, complementing its new ski jump.

Last season, Copper Mountain partnered with the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) to create the U.S. Ski Team Speed Center, an exclusive on-snow alpine ski racing venue designed to provide full length downhill training by early November each season. For the 2012-13 season Copper will fine-tune the automated snowmaking system for the Speed Center.

New snowmaking pipes are being installed at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, adding more acreage and more capacity to the East River aMount Crested Butte located at 38.884° -106.94...rea. Enhanced

snowmaking will allow the resort to open this area sooner, with better coverage in the early winter season. The resort has also leased a new Prinoth snow groomer, the Bison X,which will maintain one of the state’s best corduroy.

During the off-season, Telluride completed an operational and energy analysis on existing snowmaking equipment. After this study, the resort received a snowmaking grant through National Ski Areas Association’s (NSAA) Sustainable Slopes Program that includes five high-efficiency snowmaking guns. These new guns will be a significant addition to the 10 high-efficiency guns purchased last season, and complement the three new Piston Bully snowcat groomers that Telluride’s grooming department has added to its fleet to improve terrain grooming.

Wolf Creek not only purchased a new Piston Bully 400 Snowcat to improve terrain options, but has installed two more Gazex exploders, one in the Horseshoe Bowl and one on the Knife Ridge. The Gazex and Aviblasters are an integral part of Wolf Creek’s Avalanche Hazard Reduction Program.

Partnerships, Rental Fleets, Ski School Improvements and New Access

Copper Mountain, home of the unique Woodward at Copper, has acquired a 14’x14’ Super Tramp at the facility for the upcoming season. There are only three Super Tramps in the country. Woodward, dedicated to park and pipe progression, has also added a portable skate mini-ramp.

Silverton Mountain will begin hiking access, and heli drops for an upgrade fee, to new runs that require rappels in or out of couloirs and/or big snowy aprons. This will allow access to places like the Mad Dog, Close Out Couloirs off Storm Peak, and the Hidden Valley – a large, open powdery bowl with no accessibility except via a 100 ft. rappel. The new activity is $425 per person and promises the adventure of a lifetime.

Steamboat Resort has partnered with ski manufacturer Rossignol to create the Rossignol Experience Center. Rossignol’s line of Experience Skis were created to fit the needs of skiers ranging from novice to expert, making the progression easier, faster and more fun. Similarly, the upcoming season will see yet another step in the progression of Durango Mountain Resort as it has also partnered with ski manufacturer Rossignol to open a Rossignol Experience Center. The Durango Mountain Resort Ski School has been trained by Rossignol to incorporate the new Experience technology into their lesson programs, minimizing the learning curve and getting resort skiers out and enjoying the entire mountain quicker than ever. Crested Butte Mountain Resort will also introduce its new partnership with Rossignol this season, and the resort’s Rental and Demo Center will utilize Rossignol’s Experience Demo program to aid in the learning process.

Monarch is investing an additional $300,000 to improve the guest experience by expanding its rental and demo fleet of skis, snowboards and boots. Additionally, the Monarch ski school staff will don new highly visible green uniforms, and ski patrol will add new snowmobiles to assist guests and open terrain quickly and more efficiently.

Winter Park Resort has grown its rental fleet by adding new helmets, boots, skis and snowboards to ensure guests can enjoy the newest equipment available, while Wolf Creek has also invested heavily in its rental fleet to provide the same opportunity.

OutdoorIndustryB2B.com Connecting Businesses in the Outdoor Industry

OI B2B

OutdoorIndustryB2B.com a business-to-business website has just launched and is offering an inexpensive alternative to marketing services or supplies to outdoor industry buyers. Manufacturers and any type of outdoor business can find the resources they need to grow their business and produce their products.

Photographers, programmers, consultants, sourcing material companies, distributors, rep agencies, packaging and trade show booth companies etc. can create robust profiles and are examples of sellers. Buyers can enter the site confidentially to search and view extensive profiles, connect and send RFP’s through the site.

“I used to be a supplier to the Outdoor Industry by owning a website and design company. The Outdoor Industry was our niche. I found it a challenge to contact the right decision makers and to market to the industry other than by attending trade shows or do cold-calling. This platform will allow those that serve the Outdoor Industry to showcase in detail their services, clients and portfolios. Buyers will be able to find the services and products they need to grow their businesses”, said Laurel King, owner and founder.

It’s free for the buyer to search and find a service or product they need. Sellers will pay a launching special fee of only $100 for the first year. Their companies will be showcased to the public and to any buyer who chooses to participate. As part of the site, sellers will be able to receive and respond to RFP’s.

The site will be announced and marketed through various avenues including OutdoorIndustryJobs.com, which as a database of over 2000 employers and an email list of 40,000 people in the industry. Laurel King says, “I am excited about the potential of the site. With the support of the industry, I hope to provide a robust and valuable resource for businesses to find each other.”

Colorado Alliance of Environmental Educators need your help in developing its future

I serve on the Board of Directors of the Colorado Alliance of Environmental Educators. We need some input on the future of CAEE.  If you have a relationship with Environmental Education and Colorado can you please complete the survey. The original deadline was tomorrow but we are not getting enough feedback so…..

Warmest greetings. The Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education (CAEE) for your thoughts and opinions about the future of our organization. We acknowledge you as a leader in our community, and your observations, views and insights are important to us!

CAEE is beginning the process of updating our strategic plan, a plan that will outline our vision, goals and primary activities for the next five years. Currently our organization is operating under the guidance of a 2006 strategic plan, and many of the goals and activities described in that plan have been accomplished. Furthermore, as we look ahead to the future, we must consider that much about our social, economic, political, educational, environmental, and organizational climate has changed in the last decade.

How should CAEE change to adapt to these new conditions? Who do we need to reach out to? What do we need to do to be most effective in the future?

As an alliance of organizations for environmental education, what might we do to provide services to and attract the support of the many potential allies in our state-wide community? And more specifically, what might we do to serve your needs and the needs of your peers?

We want to know what you think.

Attached to this email, we are sending you a short list of questions. Our hope is that you will take the time to contemplate and carefully consider your response, as your views will help us plan the future for this organization.

Please help us by writing your answers and returning them to us (see address below), OR calling us to discuss these ideas before Friday August 24th.

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Y939ZGJ

If you have any questions or concerns, or would rather discuss these ideas personally, please feel free to call or write to CAEE OR to the name and address below. (Karen is helping to facilitate our planning process, and will be viewing and compiling your responses.) We may also follow up with a personal phone call to you.

Sincerely,

Katie Navin – Executive Director  katienavin@caee.org   w: 303-273-9527

and   Karen Hardesty  email: karenhardesty@caee.org     h: 303-457-1761

Thanks
